A couple's problem isn't a trip's problem
A trip has a beginning and an end. A relationship doesn't: expenses pile up month after month and the account never quite closes. That's how "we'll sort it out later" turns into an awkward conversation three months on.
There's another difference: couples often don't split evenly. If one earns considerably more, halving everything isn't fair — and keeping that tally by hand is impossible.
Split by percentage, not always down the middle
Each expense can be split equally, by percentage or by exact amounts. If you agree on 60/40 based on what each of you earns, you set it and the app does the rest. You can also leave out whatever is only one person's.
The household and the two of you, kept apart
Keep one group for the home — rent, power, groceries, internet — and another for what you do together: dinners, trips, presents. That way the monthly balance doesn't get tangled up with the summer holiday.
When it's time to square up
A payment closes when the person owed confirms it, not when the payer says so. It sounds small and it heads off the classic "I thought I'd already sent you that". It's recorded, and that's the end of it.
